Back from GDC -- Possible New News

Laurie and Dave arrived back from San Francisco early Monday morning. (Gotta love delayed flights... someone should make a game about that!) The week was an adventure for sure. You can read more about the AI portions of it over at IA on AI.

There may be a shift in direction (and momentum) for Airline Traffic Manager coming up. We are going to be doing some experimentation with a new approach for the client development. The current MFC-based client was our bottleneck for development and it was meant to be a throw-away interface anyway. Changing this direction on things may be just what we need to spring-board ATM's progress forward.

Additionally, we may have decided on the route we are taking for distribution eventually. We need to investigate more. Check back for details! (Remember to subscribe to this blog for news updates as they happen.)

GDC for the week

Dave and Laurie are in San Francisco this week for the Game Developers Conference. One of the major events this week is the AI Summit at which Dave is giving https://www.cmpevents.com/GD09/a.asp?option=C&V=11&SessID=8483 and sitting on a panel. Of course, the debut of Dave's book, "Behavioral Mathematics for Game AI" on the Expo floor will be a nice touch as well.

Keep an eye here and on the sister blog, IA on AI, for updates and observations from the show. It should be a heckuva week!

Gamasutra "Expert Blogger"

Today I was invited to begin writing as an "Expert Blogger" for Gamasutra, the game industry's #1 news and information source. This is apparently something they have started recently. There are "member blogs" and "expert ones". It seems like anyone can start a member blog on the site, but the "expert" ones are invite only. Anyway, I'm in some good company. Some of the other experts that are blogging there include Mark DeLoura, Brenda Brathwaite, and Noah Falstein. Not bad company!

Anyway, I was encouraged to cross-post some of my material from IA on AI and Post-Play'em so if you follow those, you will see some duplication at times.

Anyway, mosey on over to my new blog at Gamasutra. I'm very honored to be included in that family.

Dave Mark Guest Speaker at Nebraska Game Dev Club

I should have posted this prior to the event, but with pre-GDC crunch time, I have been more than a bit busy.

I was asked to be a guest speaker at a new game development group meeting at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln on March 9th, 2009. The Nebraska Game Development Club is an official university club on campus that just started in February. They have about 30 members right out of the gate ranging from programmers to musicians to designers and artists. (Unfortunately, they are a little short on 3D modelers and animators.)

I spoke just generally on the game business and tried not to scare them too much about how hard it is to get into the industry. One message that I conveyed was that, simply by forming the group and seriously working on some projects, they are already moving forward beyond the people who don't have that hands-on, group development experience. That is, they are doing more than simply saying "I have this cool game idea!" That experience will set them well apart from the millions of people aged 10-40 that think they are going to create the "next killer game" or whatever.

Anyway, they have invited me back to take a look at their progress on the three projects they have going on. I'm looking forward to doing so. They have a good thing going on down there. I also plan on extending invites to the members to the Omaha Game Developers Association meetings once we get that reorganized.

And you never know when a studio in Nebraska might be looking for local talent, eh?
