Here is a collection of links that Intrinsic Algorithm has found helpful, interesting, or amusing.
GameDev.net is a phenomenal resource for all manner of game development
needs. It has links to thousands of articles all categorized by subject. They are also home to the most active
message forums for game developers on the internet.
It is an amazing place where all levels of game industry professionals
can discuss subjects, trade ideas, ask for help on various topics and even make a cyber-friend or two!
Dave Mark is "InnocuousFox"
in these forums. Look for him and say 'Hi!'
Gamasutra
is also a fantastic resource for all things relating to
games. They have news updates, articles and reviews of latest
titles and techniques and features including "postmortems"
of games written by the developers themselves. All in all, it
is a very educational site and is well visited by much of the game
development community. Microsoft, EA and other major titles
even advertise their open jobs on Gamasutra. The
Gama network is also behind the Game
Developers' Conference and Game Developer Magazine.
The IGDA is the International Game
Developers Association. They support and explore many issues surround the game development industry.
In a way, they are the equivalent of a benevolent union.
The AIGameDev.com is the creation of Alex J. Champandard.
He has worked into turning this site into a rediculously prodigious font of AI knowledge of all sorts! I had the honor
of reviewing Alex's book, "AI Game Development", a few years back and that made me realize that Alex has much to offer the industry.
His RSS feed is so active that it makes my head spin! I wholeheartedly reccommend this site to any AI programmer.
The AI Depot is
yet another source of all manner of information on Artificial Intelligence run by Mat Buckland, an extraordinary AI programmer and author.
Make sure to subscribe to the RSS feed there!
The GameAI page is
run by Steven "Ferretman" Woodcock. He has many links to a variety of
Artificial Intelligence topics on his site as well as a fascinating
set of "behind the scenes" explanations of AI in various
games that are on the market (or were at some point). Steve has also been one of the "3 AI Guys" responsible for
putting on AI roundtables at past Game
Developers' Conferences. While you are there, make sure you check out the section entitled, "you might be a game developer". Good stuff!
The Serious Games Source page is
one that I'm keeping my eye on. They deal primarily with the new frontier of game technology in industries such as government, business, and education.
Since Intrinsic Algorithm is interested in simulation modeling,
this would be a logical place for news of projects beyond the game industry to crop up.
Flight Explorer Personal Edition allows you
to track almost all the aircraft in the air over North America in almost real time (5 minute delay). I use it all the time for business, research,
and simply to have fun! It only costs $10 a month for up to 20 hours of usage. There is also a free demo mode that shows you with pre-recorded data
how the program works and all the different filters and overlays you can use. It doesn't hurt to check it out!
Airliners.Net has a massive collection of aviation photography! The have millions of photos
of commercial, private, and military aircraft. It is all in a searchable database so you can look for planes by type, company, date, place, photographer,
or a variety of other criteria. Even magazines and newspapers use the photos from the site! They have high standards for quality. (I can't even get
them to accept my photos.) Also, they have the most active aviation forums on the web.
If you want to know what is going on in the world of planes, this is the place to go. Oh... did I mention the pictures?
For your listening pleasure, this is a great repository of life air traffic control feeds from around the world. They even have archives so you
can listen to your flight's ATC after you get off the plane! OK... that's a bit goofy. I wouldn't REALLY do that, would I?
